Print: 24" x 36"
Sheet size: 30" x 42"

Home is wherever you roam. This Woodcut print is available on two different papers; Moon Peach with a creamy tone and speckling which invokes sandy debris and Masa which is bright white for a more modern bold look. Either way Herman will bring a sense of whimsy and beach vibes to any space.
Process
Drawn and carved over the course of two months for a BIG INK event, I wanted to use this piece to experiment with textures and contrast the rough shell with the crab's smooth body.

The work in this show reflects on my time in Jaipur, Agra, and New Delhi, India. These cities are beautiful places, full of incredible art, history, food, and music. Simultaneously, they force us, as comfortable Americans, to confront the negative aspects of society that we often push to the boundaries of our own cities and often do our best to ignore completely during our vacations: poverty, overcrowding, and unsanitary conditions. But the beauty and elegance of these cities, as their centuries-old architecture blends with modern life and technology, is striking. The streets are filled with cars, bikes, cattle, motorcycles, trucks, dogs, pedestrians, goats, and elephants all moving together in a synchronized dance, communicated through car horns, hand signals, and shouts. To an outsider, it’s loud, pungent chaos, but it’s daily life and a fluent second-language of movement to the cities’ residents. As I walked the streets in each city, looking up, power lines seemed to come from every direction, floating whenever and wherever they pleased as residents plugged into the technology that we keep neatly contained here at home.

BARBARA & ADAM MAITLAND
These woodblock prints of Beetlejuice's friendliest ghosts, Adam and Barbara Maitland, are a playful take on classic Victorian portraiture. The Maitlands, caught between the living and the dead, face each other as they pull their features into grotesque shapes to scare the new occupants of their beloved home.

Process
To begin my design, I referenced stills from the film to begin sketching out my concept. Once the design was planned out in rough sketches, I transferred the image to the block using transfer paper. The tricky part is making sure the image is mirrored horizontally because when the block is printed the image will be facing the opposite direction. Once my woodblock is prepared, I start inking. During this stage, I add in details using various pens and brushes to help guide my carving. My inking is often more of guide than a set direction. I like to let the different tools bring their own characteristics to the line work. Once I’ve finished carving the block, it’s ready to be inked and printed.

An ode to my favorite creature, H.R. Giger's Alien, and his feline friend, Jonesy the cat. During there interactions on the spaceship Nostromo, the Alien seems more curious than hostel to Jonesy. Aliens need cuddles too. This woodcut print was carved and hand pulled in 2016 on a cream Okawara paper.
Process
Using reference I began the process by sketching out a small composition with basic shapes and minimal detail. After transferring the sketch to the block I started fleshing out the details in ink. Once I completed inking the details carved the outline of the form with a vein gouge so I had an shape to work within. After this I started carving the details inside the form using a variety of V, U and vein gouges.

5" x 8" Linocut Print on Paper
Edition of 30

A social commentary on the petulant outbursts of the irassible self proclaimed "stable genius" Donald J. Trump. This hand printed linocut print is a three stage reduction. A reduction print is a multicolor print in which the separate colors printed from the same block at different stages. The lightest color of the design is printed first, then the block is "reduced" by carving to the areas to print the second color from, and so forth.
The image measures 8 x 11.5 inches and is printed on 11x 14 inch white stonehenge paper.

The lightest color of the design is printed first, then the block is "reduced" by carving away areas to print the second color from. This process is then repeated until the final color layer is printed.

Three stage monotype of Northampton from underneath the bike path off of Bridge Street. Walking underneath this bridge, its always shady and damp. Water drips from the stone wall and sometimes from the bridge itself. The air cooled as the sun set on this spring evening.

Three stage monotype of Main Street in Northampton, overlooking the courthouse on a brisk morning. W
alking in downtown one bright morning in January, I remember the air was dry and bitter. Main street was buzzing with cars and pedestrians on their way to work. I observed the people standing at the bus stop and sprinting across the street before the light changed—going here and coming from there; everyone had somewhere to be and something to do. I tried to capture the echoes of their movements and the paths they forged that cold morning.

This series of monotype prints were inspired by my commute to work in the Pioneer Valley. I started to notice the way power lines, trees and buildings broke up the skyline. We drive on roads and highways everyday, whether to the office, the grocery store or some unknown desitination. The implication of travel creates a narrative element in these compositions. Where are we going, when will be get there and what will we encounter along the way? The stark contrast and thick applicant of the ink create a ominous mood and a eery feeling as you travel down these uncertain roads.
